Transportation Department
Client Business Need/ Problem:
Department of state agency that manages the elevated span across a major metropolitan city. The department plans use traffic management software for management and dispatch of police. It needed a company to deliver a turnkey system for the edge devices, which included cameras and vehicle detectors, as well as a network to carry the traffic. In addition, because the lights are centrally controlled to come on at night, no power was available at most of the locations during the day.

GDS Solution:
GDS delivered a solution that used native IP edge devices, including Axis Cameras and EIS vehicle detection, connected via Cisco ruggedized outdoor switches. GDS deployed multiple wireless technologies, including Mesh Access Points from Cisco, Gigabit Point-to-point Microwave from BridgeWave and 100Mbps Point-to-point Microwave from DragonWave to provide the infrastructure. The elements were used to create a backhaul redundant ring technology, as well as bi-directional Mesh to eliminate single points of failure.

GDS had cabinets fabricated to meet harsh environmental standards and outfitted them with electrical components and batteries which store the power at night to run the devices during the day. All elements of the system are networked or network-aware and are centrally managed using HP Openview.

Result:
The solution will provide real time monitoring of traffic status and alerts of anomalies. The Police can immediately view camera feeds and instruct patrolmen to the most effective action. In addition, the network is poised for growth with Gigabit backhaul and future applications are possible using the Mesh Access Points to provide secure wireless access for patrolmen along the span to upload reports, automobile video feeds, etc.
